The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) headquarters is built around a simple idea: movement and wellness shape the way people work. Every design decision, including the lighting, follows from that idea. The building has earned LEED v4 Silver certification, a reflection of the same care extended to how it performs environmentally.

Two stairwells anchor the experience of moving through the building. One rises along the façade, its perforated bronze screen glowing amber at dusk, visible from Potomac Avenue as a kind of beacon. The other climbs through a seven-story atrium at the building’s core, open and sun-filled, lit to feel expansive rather than enclosed.

Light here is tuned, not fixed. A dynamic control system tracks daylight through the atrium’s windows and adjusts the interior lighting to match, dimming or brightening in real time so the two never compete. The system also follows a circadian rhythm, shifting color temperature over the course of the day, cooler and more energizing in the morning, softer and warmer as afternoon turns to evening, supporting the body’s own sense of time rather than working against it.

That same intention carries into the workspace. Recessed and cove lighting keep the open floors calm and even, while pendant fixtures in the lounge and collaboration areas add a lower, more personal layer of light. Every setting is considered against how people actually move through their day, aligning the building’s design with APTA’s own mission: a workplace that moves, breathes, and feels well.
